Wusthof Sharpening Steel
My good buddy Jake works as a sous chef. Since the guy’s a pro in the kitchen, I asked him what’s the best ceramic sharpening rod on the market, and he suggested that I splurge the cash for a Wusthof sharpening steel which you can see below.
Jake was practically raving and gushing over this ceramic sharpening steel and I couldn’t help but wonder whether he was for real. Yes he’s an expert in the kitchen and all, but this is the same guy who raved and gushed over that horrendous Batman & Robin film starring George Clooney!
Here’s one of my principles in life: I don’t care if you’re the best of the best in your chosen field. If you love that Batman & Robin turd that came out back in 97, then your feedback/judgment cannot be trusted 100%. Folks, never trust someone who LOVES that Batman & Robin movie - end of story.
So instead of following Jake’s recommendation and bought the Wusthof sharpening steel right away, I opted to swing by Amazon.com to check out some reviews (while secretly hoping that the reviews weren’t posted by a Batman & Robin fan).
What did I discover?
Apparently, it is the best ceramic sharpening rod…or at least one of the best ones out there!
Turns out the opinion of Jake the sous chef extraordinaire slash die-hard Batman & Robin fan can be trusted after all. Go figure…
At the time, before I made my purchase which was nearly a year ago, the reviews were uniformly positive. Now, I’m not so sure. You can find out by checking out the link below.
Anyway, I’m so happy I bought it. This rod has been keeping my kitchen knives samurai sword sharp, thus making cutting, slicing and dicing a real treat.
3 Reasons why I like this Wusthof sharpening steel…
1) It’s a darn aggressive and highly effective sharpening steel
I have sharpened just about all the knives I own with it and results were excellent across the board. Yesterday, I used it to sharpen my old fishing knife and also a utility knife and they got extremely sharp after 4 to 5 strokes.
2) It’s easy to use
That being said, if you have zero experience in sharpening knives, then you ought to be careful. For your info, the surface of this Wusthof sharpening steel is loaded with fine abrasives and they get rid of some very small parts of your blade. If you have a set of highly precious knives, you wouldn’t want to use this steel on them, unless you’re 100% sure what you’re doing.
Those with zero knife sharpening experience should get some practice time first. Practice using this ceramic sharpening steel on a few old knives that you no longer give a crap about. That’s what I did when I first got a hold of this rod even though at the time, I already had some experience sharpening knives.
I didn’t let my ego get in the way! I kept on practicing. I practiced like 10 hours each day for 10 straight months, until someone decided to drive me over to the nearest psychiatric center for observation.
Seriously though, practice makes perfect and pretty soon, you’ll discover that this sharpening steel is really darn easy to use.
3) Light and easy to clean
My previous metal sharpening steel was a chore to use because it was pretty heavy. The Wusthof sharpening steel feels light to me, and easy in the hands. Easy to clean and it is necessary to wipe it down after each use to help retain the rod’s coarseness.
All in all, this is one of the best ceramic sharpening rods money can buy. Though it’s a little on the pricey side, for me, it is worth every penny. Works phenomenally well and it’s been almost a year since I bought it, the rod is still holding up nice and good. Highly recommended!
